Denise's c.v.
Denise Findlay graduated
from Glasgow School of Art in 1996. She showed early signs of success with a
sell-out degree show followed by a string of solo exhibitions early in her
career she was awarded th
Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award three
times.
Denise is primarily interested with figurative drawing and painting.
She has said, "painting is a visual language and the viewer should not be
left to figure out its meaning". She is dedicated to the skill of drawing and
painting and the traditions used in times past which are often not taught
today. she chooses to work on a wide variety of scales and surfaces. from
huge 6 foot canvasses to tiny 5cm miniatures. in her large works she really
forces the viewer to look at the subject and the beauty of oil paint as the
painting is built up with soft layers of paint which is allowed to stream
down the canvas. her miniatures offer a delicate sensitivity and intimacy
drawing the viewer in closer to appreciate the painting. She also loves to
challenge herself by
painting on unusual objects. She searches vintage shops to find any thing
that could be interpreted into her art. She has painted on vinal records,
old toffee tins, jigsaws and even an old silver spoon!
Drawing is the foundation of all Denise's work .Her skills are displayed at
best in her beautiful pencil drawings. She painstakingly builds up the
drawing with tiny lines following the contours of the portrait resulting in
a drawing with strength and depth.
Denise is also inventive and unafraid of new challenges. She has even
incorporated her love for fabric and embroidery with her painting to produce
a modern take on collage. It is a fitting tribute to her Great Great
Grandmother Jessie Newbery, Fra Newbery's wife,
and her beautiful embroidered belts and collars..
In more recent times her work has introduced more narrative themes. In which
multiple figures appear sometimes with animals alongside or even on there
own.
Denise's work comes from the heart and displays a true talent. She is
dedicated to her work and we wait with excitement to see how her work
develops.
